Emerald is the traditional birthstone for those born in May and also celebrates the 55th wedding anniversary.
Like Aquamarine, Emerald is a variety of the mineral Beryl. Emeralds colour can range from light green to deep green. The most valuable Emeralds are intensely green, and the rarest are blue-green in colour.
Emerald gets its name from the Greek word "smaragdus" meaning green.
Emeralds were mined in Egypt as far back as 330 BC and were famously adored by Cleopatra. She claimed ownership of all Egyptian Emerald mines during her reign.
Emeralds are thought to symbolise rebirth and are believed to bring its owner youthfulness and great fortune.
Emerald is also known as "The stone of successful love," and is thought to inspire loyalty and domestic bliss. An Emerald changing in colour is believed to signal unfaithfulness.
